Suzanne LaFleur | Love Aubrey Review | Moss Green Children’s Books

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Love Aubrey is the fantastic debut novel by new author Suzanne LaFleur, The cover of this debut teenage book says that Aubrey will make you cry and make you smile and the author doesn’t disappoint.
This is a heart-warming emotional tale of love, friends and most importantly family, which is set to become a cherished and well loved book for children and young teenagers. Aubrey has the ingredients of a  classic children’s book.

Eleven year old Aubrey is on her own, something heartbreaking has happened and her mother has disappeared and left her.

“It was fun at first, playing house.
I made all my own meals. Crackers and cheese, three times a day. It’d been a good three days. A perfect world.
Then I ran out of cheese.”

Aubrey is discovered home alone by her grandmother Gram who takes her away from her home and Virginia all the way to Vermont and a new life without her mother or her family. Because what lies in Aubrey’s past is a terrible truth which Aubrey can’t handle and her mother has tried to run away from.

‘Vermont smelled like cows.
Virginia had smelled like cows too sometimes, but not like this.
“Vermont stinks,” I said.
Gram had nothing to say to that. I looked down at my shoes.
Soon we reached her yard. Her driveway was gravel under the trees. Her house, from the outside, was what I remembered: three stories grey, with a wraparound porch. I walked up to the porch with Gram beside me. I looked sideways. Gram’s face was wet. I stood in her doorway and threw up.’

With the support and love of her grandmother Aubrey starts again, and discovers a new network of support from her best friend Bridget and her family. With the love of her grandmother and through the letters Aubrey writes to people missing in her life, she begins to discover that although everything may seem lost it isn’t always the case.

Suzanne LaFleur writes in a truly captivating way, completely encompassing the world through a child’s eyes.  Her easy flowing narrative and wonderful imagery makes Love Aubrey a delightful story for young teenagers and a must read. Is Love Aubrey a future classic children’s book?

This book is rated as a touch green because of it’s strong themes on relationships and its attitudes about being kind and caring.

Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie | Children’s Story Book

Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie by Joel Stewart

Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie by Joel Stewart

Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie is an entertaining children’s book that is about a friendship. Joel Stewart is the author and talented illustrator of this children’s story book.

The Big Blue Beastie wants to eat up Dexter because he is bored. Dexter is suitably creative and comes up with a variety of different ideas on how to entertain the Beastie. They get into a variety of very different escapades.

All is fine until Dexter runs out of new ideas on how to entertain the Big Beastie. It is not looking good, until there is a switch in the story and an unexpected turn of events.

I am sure that you will enjoy reading this children’s story book. The book has special qualities to it which are not often found in children’s books. This children’s book is Not Green but you must not hold that against this book.

Pumpkin Soup – Children’s Story Book – Moss Green Children’s Books

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Pumpkin Soup is a Children’s story book about a group of friends who have their routine all sorted out.

Cat, Squirrel and Duck are three friends who make Pumpkin Soup together every day. They always do it the same way. The very talented author is Helen Cooper.

Each of the three friends in this children’s story book has their own specific role. They do not change their roles.

 ”But one morning the Duck

Woke up early.

He tiptoed into the kitchen

And smiled at the

Squirrel’s special spoon.

Wouldn’t it be fine, he murmered

“If I could be the Head Cook”

You will not be surprised to know that war breaks out between the three very good friends. The fight is over the spoon which is used for stirring the soup.

The fight is all about roles and responsibilities. It reminds me of the strikes that were called in the 60’s. These were demarcation disputes between different Trade Unions over who did what.

This is a children’s book review and not a thesis on working practices in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the affect is the same. There is a major bust up between three very good friends.

Finally, after a fair amount of sadness the three friends come back together and understand the value of friends and the importance of sharing. This is a lesson for life which every one needs to learn and appreciate. There is no doubt that this children’s book creatively communicates the idea of sharing.

Pumpkin soup is not a Green children’s story book. It is however, a children’s book which all children and the majority of adults would benefit from reading.
