One Mole Digging a Hole by Julia Donaldson and Nick Sharratt

One Mole Digging a Hole by Julia Donaldson and Nick Sharratt

One Mole Digging a Hole is colourful and cheerful children’s book which clearly illustrates counting from One  to Ten

The children’s book is written by Julia Donaldson and Nick Sharratt and the common theme through the different illustrations is gardening. The ideas behind some of the numbers made me smile and are suitably ridiculous and amusing. For example what rhymes with 9 doves?

The illustrator, Neil Sharratt has dedicated the book as follows. For Neil, gardener extraordinaire.

If you are looking for children’s book which helps you teach your child or grandchild about numbers and which will amuse and involve your child then this is the book for you. It is evaluated as a touch green.

The Magic Paintbrush | Children’s Book | Moss Green Children’s Books

Monday, August 17th, 2009

The Magic Paintbrush is an exquisite children’s book that was written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Joel Stewart.

“He looks around. He calls to Shen.
Come here!” he whispers.” Hush!
We don’t want all the world to know
About this magic brush”

The Magic Paintbrush | Children's Book by Julia Donaldson

The Magic Paintbrush | Children's Book by Julia Donaldson

“He slips the brush into her hand
And tells her to be sure
Never to paint for wealthy folk
But only for the poor.”

It is for very good reason that the Daily Telegraph commented on the Magic Paintbrush. “The Best Recent Picture Book.” I fully concur with this view.

I have no doubt that this children’s book will become a family favourite. This is one of those children’s books that parents as well as the children will both enjoy reading. The plot will hold your attention and there is a final twist with the Dragon’s tail.

Dragons seem to play a very strong role in Chinese mythology. At the same time Dragons feature in English mythology with Saint George and the Dragon.

This is an excellent children’s book and comes highly recommended. It is evaluated as not green, but does not detract from the fact that it is an excellent children’s book.

Children’s Book:The Smartest Giant in Town|Moss Green Children’s Books

Children's Books: The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson

Children's Books: The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson

The Smartest Giant in Town is a children’s book that you really must read to your children.

This is an original story about a giant and not your usual giant that you will find in many other children’s books. However, to begin with you might think otherwise.

“George was a giant, the scruffiest giant in town. He always wore the same pair of brown sandals and the same old patched- up gown.

I wish I wasn’t the scruffiest giant in town” he said sadly”

So one day he sees a new shop selling giant-size clothes. He decides it is time for a new look.

George buys himself smart trousers, a smart shirt, stripy tie and shiny shoes.

On the way home George has a number of adventures. He meets a number of different animals who desperately need his help. What he does is way beyond what most of us do in helping out someone in need.

George is a very kind and thoughtful Giant who comes to the rescue of everyone else who is in need.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this children’s book. I was therefore not surprised to read the following review from The Independent on Sunday.

My absolute favourite of this year’s picture books…..Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler are a combination made in heaven.

The smartest Giant in Town is evaluated as not green.

Fly, Pigeon, Fly |Children’s Book review |Moss Green Children’s Books

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Father was often grumpy and would snap at the young boy. Naturally, the young boy decided that it was best not to go straight home after school.
Fly, Pigeon, Fly! by John Henderson and Julia Donaldson

Fly, Pigeon, Fly! by John Henderson and Julia Donaldson

Fly, Pigeon, Fly! is a touching and very meaningful children’s book that was co authored by John Henderson and Julia Donaldson.

The hero of the book is a young boy who grew up in Glasgow. The father of the young boy used to work in the docks until he was made redundant.

It was on one of these occasions that the young boy went down to the docks. In the docks he found a baby pigeon.

The pigeon was half starved. The young boy is very kind and considerate to the young pigeon and names him Percy. Then he decides to take Percy home with him.

Once, he is home he builds a house for the pigeon and takes care of him. The young boy also teaches the pigeon to fly.

Father has a very strong opinion that Percy must be set free. There is a surprising twist when Father takes Percy to work to set him free.

Percy is eventually released by the young boy on a school trip to the sea. I particularly appreciate the illustration of the pigeon flying free from the beach which is by Thomas Docherty.

This children’s book is evaluated as a Touch Green.

Children’s Book Review | Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book | Moss Books

Charlie Cook's favourite book by Julia Donaldson

Charlie Cook's favourite book by Julia Donaldson

Charlie Cook’s favourite Book is an enchanting book that was written by Julia Donaldson and Illustrated by Alex Scheffler.

This is one of those books that could become your favourite children’s book. There are lots of fun and laughter in this book for kids.

There are extracts from a variety of different books that you will recognise and enjoy. One book is called Shiver my Timbers and another is Fairy Tales from a forgotten Island”

A large part of the enjoyment in reading Charlie Cook’s favourite Book is the unexpected illustrations

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for a second time. I think that the reason is that on the second reading I came across several unexpected illustrations that I had missed the first time that I read the book. These all made me laugh or smile.

The Gaurdian’s review was “Younger readers will delight in the drama of Donaldson’s vivacious rhyming text and the panache of Scheffler’s illustrations” At the same time the Scotsman wrote “A glorious celebration of books and reading”

This is not a green book but a children’s book which you and your children will fall in love with.

Monkey Puzzle – Review of a Classic Children’s Books

Monkey Puzzle - Classsic Children's Books

Monkey Puzzle - Classsic Children's Books

The Monkey Puzzle is another of Julia Donaldson’s Classic Children’s Books which has been illustrated excellently by Axel Scheffler. The storybook is published by Macmillan Children’s Books.

This kids story is about a young monkey who has lost his mother

“I’ve lost my mum!”

“Hush, little monkey, don’t you cry.

I’ll help you find her,” said butterfly.

“Let’s have a think. How big is she?”

She’s big!” said the monkey. Bigger than me.”

“Bigger than you? Then I’ve seen your mum.

Come, little monkey, come, come, come.”

The two then set off into the forest in search of Mum monkey. Needless to say they meet up with half of the different animals of the forest in their search.

The illustrations in this kids story book has all of the magic that I have come to expect from a book illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The butterfly has gone bald and more often than not has a worried look on his face.

This kids storybook made me smile as I read it.  However in this book, I missed the unexpected humerous twist that I have  previously found, in other kids stories written by the author. The Green Credentials of this storybook is “A Touch Green.”

Stick Man : Review of New Childrens Books

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009
Stick Man - New Children's Book

Stick Man - New Children's Book

The authors of new Childrens books have lost none of their creative abilities to produce delightful books. I thoroughly recommend the  “Stick Man”.

The creators of this inspired book, the ”Stick Man” are the winning combination of Julia Donaldson, the author and the illustrator, Axel Scheffler. The publisher is Scholastic.

The hero of this kid’s book is a stick man who has a very adventurous life. The adventures all start with the stick man waking early and taking an early morning jog.

Unfortunately, the Stick Man does not take enough care himself with the dog.

“A stick” barks the dog

“An excellent stick

The right kind of stick

for my favourite trick”

The Stick Man’s adventures go on from there. He comes through a variety of  different scrapes. They are all where you would expect to find a stick with its own particular role.

The next time you take the children for a walk you can bring the book alive. See if you can find the Stick Man and do not forget to take him home to the family tree.

I have rated the book on the green rating criteria as a Splash Green which may be rather harsh. However, I think it is a fair rating. This rating detracts nothing from the book.

It is highly entertaining kid’s book and I am certain it will help your children fall in love with books. Doubtless, this kid’s book will become a favourite new childrens book of your children or the grandchildren.
