The Pea and the Princess a children's book by Mini Grey

The Pea and the Princess a children's book by Mini Grey

The Pea and the Princess which Mini Grey wrote and illustrated is a notable children’s book. There is an enchanting twist to this children’s story.

“Many years ago, I was born in the Palace Allotment,
Among rows of carrot and beetroot and cabbage.
I nestled snugly in a velvety pod with my brothers and sisters.
I felt a tingle. I knew somehow I would be important.”

As you can see, this book for kids is written from the perspective of the pea. There are some close scrapes for the pea at the beginning of the story. The pea almost becomes part of a New Recipe.

Mini Grey’s illustrations of The Palace Allotment that Mini Grey has illustrated is very ordered. The vegetables are well disciplined and in  neat rows. Just as a Palace allotment should be.

You will not expect the final twist in this children’s story of the Pea and the Princess. The Green evaluation of this children’s book is a touch green.

The Hedgehog’s Balloon | Children’s Book | Moss Green Children’s Book

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I have little doubt that you will enjoy reading this delightful children’s book called the Hedgehog’s balloon

“Sitting on the tree stump, and looking very upset, was a hedgehog. Two mice were doing their best to comfort him.” “Goodness me” said Percy. “Whatever is the matter?”

Hedgehog is upset because he could never have balloons. “The trouble was that he could never have balloons because they would always burst on his spines.”

Percy, the park keeper has a very creative mind and is able to solve Hedgehog’s problems. You can imagine the size of the smile on the Hedgehog’s face as he scampers off.

Nick Butterworth the author is the inspiration behind Percy the Park keeper series of books. It does not surprise me to read that the stories have sold over two million copies around the world. The Hedgehog’s balloon is evaluated as a Touch Green.

The Sea-Thing Child | Children’s Books | Moss Green Children’s Books

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

On a very dark and stormy night the Sea -Thing Child is thrown up onto the beach in this children’s book. The next morning the Sea-

Thing Child lay – “a little black heap of scales and feathers, all alone”

The Sea – Thing Child was too little to swim very well and he hadn’t learned to fly yet. “He was nothing but a little draggled heap of fright”.

Russell Hoban the author immediately holds the readers attention by placing our terrified Sea- Thing Child in a very dire situation. At the same time laid back humour is an integral element of this kid’s book.

Our Sea – Thing Child is made for the deep diving and high flying but right now he is afraid of the ocean. He just needs to survive after his battering by the stormy sea.

On the beach is a fiddler crab that has no bow who meets up with the Sea – Thing Child. The two of them have a special relationship of friendship where they both help each other to cope with the circumstances that they are in.

As time goes by the Sea – Thing Child grows in confidence and he then finds his star in the night sky. This is the signal for him to return to the ocean in which he was born.

The illustrations by Patrick Benson are outstanding in this children’s book and are full of feelings. The book’s green rating evaluation is  a Touch Green.

The Ugly Duckling -Children’s story Book Review -Moss Green Children’s Books

The Ugly Duckling by Kevin Crossley-Holland A Children's story book

The Ugly Duckling by Kevin Crossley-Holland A Children's story book

Children’s story books which are old classics never loose their quality with age and time. I have just read Kevin Crossley-Holland’s touching version of the Ugly Duckling. This book is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s original children’s book.

This children’s story book has lost none of the charm of the classic. The scene is set in the countryside.

“How lovely it was in the summer country. Green oats, and wheat green-and-gold; the thick sweet smell of newly-scythed hay.”

Into this idyllic landscape the duck has built her nest. All of the eggs cracked open and the ducks hatched. There was one exception which was the largest egg. The first thought is that it is a Turkey egg. Turkey’s do not swim and never go near the water.

Eventually, the large egg hatches. The ugly duckling does not fear of the water and within moments is in the water. It is obviously not a turkey.

The ugly duckling does not have a happy childhood. What ever it does is wrong. It is bullied and ostracised by the fellow ducks.

The ugly duckling has a life of unhappy scrapes and bumps. It is an unfortunate life. The reader begins to think that nothing will ever go right.

Fortunately, our ugly duckling eventually finds out his true origins on the closing pages of this children’s book. We end on the right note for a children’s book. The evaluation is a touch green.

OSCAR and the BIRD – Children’s book Review.

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Oscar and the Bird is an informative  children’s book  all about electricity.

The author-illustrator of this book for Kids is    Geoff Waring and it is published by Walker Books. It is very clearly written

OSCAR and the BIRD Children's Book about Electricity

OSCAR and the BIRD Children's Book about Electricity

” One day, Oscar saw a tractor

standing in the field. He climbed

up to look into the cab, when

suddenly the windscreen wiper

Started to move…..

SWISH SWISH

“How did that happen?”

Oscar wondered.

Bird explains everything to our curious kitten. A switch is pressed by mistake which fuels Oscar full of questions all about electricity. This is where Bird steps in to explain all about how electricity.

How electricity is made

How electricity works

What electricity is made from

Oscar the cat is cartoon character with a totally unique look and character. He comes over as a bold and yet endearing cat who has been simply illustrated.

You need to know that The author- illustrator, Geoff Waring based his drawings on Oscar the cat on his own cat which was called Oskar.

There seems to be a special relationship with his own cat called Oskar which is captured in the cartoon character of Oscar.

This is an educational and instructive children’s book which I am sure that parents will enjoy reading to their children. Book is rated a “Touch Green.”

Olivia: Review – Children’s Story Books for Christmas

Thursday, February 12th, 2009
Olivia - helps with Christmas - Children's Story Books

Olivia - helps with Christmas - Children's Story Books

Reviews of children’s story books which are about Christmas  are best done out of the Christmas season. This allows for a more objective evaluation. Olivia helps with Christmas is so well presented. It is written by Ian Falconer and published by Simon and Schuster.

The Kid’s story book is made by the illustrations of Olivia and the family. The faces of Olivia and her brothers and sisters have a mischievous air to them.

This is a Kid’s story book which reminds you of all the wonderful things about Christmas. At the same time it reminds you of all the things that can and do go wrong at Christmas. In particular if you have a very young family.

There is a particular attractiveness to the story in this kid’s story  book which is its very simplicity. If you are looking for more than that you will not find it in this book. There are however small flashes of unexpected humour which bring it all alive.

Olivia, spends a fair time on her skis which makes me conclude that the book should be evaluated as a “Touch Green”.

In November and December this children’s story books will be the family favourite. It sets up Christmas so well. We also, all need reminding that a little help over Christmas goes a long way.

Classic Children’s Books : How to name their Green Credentials?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

The Classic Children’s Books are the books that I think will benefit most from a green rating system. The reason is that these books were written long before global warming was understood to be an issue.

The system is a  shorthand to describe the green credentials of different books. Under each heading there are various characteristics.  Each book may or may not have these characteristics. It is on this basis these kid’s books are given a ranking.

I think that the headings need to be:

  • Transparent and Clear
  • Understood
  • Indicate an amount of Green
  • Be interesting and emotive

The options up for consideration and discussion are as follows.

Alternative Headings

Your feedback and comments as to whether we have done justice to this project would be appreciated.

Do the five headings describe clearly enough differences in the green credentials? Once this is agreed the project can move on to rate the very well known and loved Classic Children’s books.
